Last week a member of the tiny house movement Malinda Crichton had her tiny house mysteriously stolen but the thieves luckily didn’t make a clean getaway! She has been building her tiny home outside her apartment for three years in West Sacramento (it’s still a work in progress) but on Tuesday, October 11th she woke up to discover it was missing.

By Wednesday news of the theft hit media outlets from coast to coast, and even outside the country as reported by the Daily Mail (UK). Apparently the house wasn’t tiny enough because it was later discovered abandoned in a parking lot an hour away. Malinda has taken her struggles as an opportunity to promote her non-profit that seeks to use tiny houses to end homelessness. For more information, go to

The tiny home on wheels (THOW) measures 13 feet tall by 33 feet long by 8 feet wide. So far she has spent $40,000 building it and expects to put in another $10,000 before it is ready to move in (like most of us, tiny homes are also often work in progress). For most, 40K is a sizable investment and while it was returned unharmed she did not have insurance and it could have all been lost.

The crazy thing is that this has happened before! Last year in Oregon, this 1,200 square feet of log house  was stolen and found about 15 miles away. It wasn’t even a house on wheels! This begs the question: What are insurance coverage options to protect these tiny homes?

Tiny Home Insurance Specialist Melissa Pacheco of Strategic Insurance cautions that it is important to consider what type of coverage you need to insure your tiny home. Through our Tiny Home Insurance Program, we offer coverage for liability but not theft of the home. Alternatively, traditional RV policies cover for theft but extends no liability to others who may be harmed at the residence. It is important to evaluate your risks, needs, exposures, etc. and choose wisely.

Below is a list of covered perils from our Tiny Home Insurance Program:

  • Fire
  • Lightning
  • Internal & External Explosion
  • Windstorm & Hail
  • Civil Commotion

  • Riot

Anti-theft locks that may be costly but Melissa says they can help prevent theft of your tiny home. “I’m finding that a lot of tiny home owners are overlooking the need for liability insurance to protect their assets. Call me for an initial quote. It only takes 15-20 minutes!” It takes just a few days to get a policy issued after your initial outreach.
